The second symbol that can be found in the story is Madeline Usher herself. The house is a direct reflection of Roderick’s mind, and as the house begins to fall apart, so does Roderick’s mind. Both can be viewed as identical entities. We have first-and foremost, the imagery associated with Roderick Usher’s intellect and the House of Usher synchronizing. “The Fall of the House of Usher” is no exception. But, as most people are aware, symbolism may be found throughout much of Poe’s work. The story of a man and his sister who live in an old family mansion and harbor strange fears. Only very few stories are able to do so in such an intriguing way as “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe. The story culminates in a terrifying climax involving the death of Roderick Usher and the destruction of the house. He soon realizes that something is very wrong with the house and its inhabitants. The protagonist, who is unnamed, comes to the house to visit his friend Roderick Usher. The house is in ruins and its occupants, the Usher family, are strange and mysterious.
